Begin in the Word
Read the passages in context.
These notes are a reading companion. Open the passages, test the notes against Scripture, and bring your questions into the light.
Begin with what is there
Before asking what a verse means for your plans, read the paragraph or chapter around it. Notice who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what question or situation the writer is handling. Poetry, a parable, a letter, and a historical account communicate in different ways.
Write down an observation that another reader could find in the passage. A repeated word, a command, a reason, or a contrast can be a useful beginning. Let your questions remain questions until you have enough context to answer them.
Keep Christ and the whole witness in view
In Luke 24, Jesus helps His followers understand the Scriptures in relation to His suffering and glory. The Bible’s witness cannot be reduced to a collection of isolated slogans about personal success. Its testimony leads us to God’s saving work and to the life He calls His people to live.
Second Timothy 3 connects Scripture with wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ and with teaching, correction, and training. Expect the Word to correct you as well as comfort you. If your reading can only confirm what you already wanted, slow down and seek help.
Respond with a specific act of obedience
James warns against hearing without doing. After reading, ask what the passage calls you to believe, confess, receive, or practice. An application should fit the passage rather than use it as a label for an unrelated plan.
Try reading James 1:19–27 today. Notice the relation between hearing, speech, anger, and action. Then choose one concrete way to become slower to speak and quicker to listen. Discuss the passage with a believer who will help you test your understanding.
